Chuck Bloom

Chuck Bloom is a retired former award-winning community journalist who was active in Texas journalism for almost 30 years.

Born and raised in Detroit, Mich., he attended the University of Michigan during tumultuous times (Class of 1974), was assistant sports editor of the Michigan Daily and spent 2 ½ years a student assistant in the U-M sports information department.

He arrived in Texas in 1976 to begin his journalistic career as sports editor/columnist of the Conroe Daily Courier in suburban Houston and worked for newspapers in the Texas Gulf Coast, Hill Country and suburban Dallas.

He also owned and operated several small community newspapers in South Texas for almost 14 years.

Health issues forced his retirement, but he wrote a monthly column for the Collin County Opinions section of the Dallas Morning News and maintains a somewhat consistent blog – chuckbloom.blogspot.com.

During his career, he has earned more than 75 first-place state and regional press awards, four times as the state’s top columnist in his division and four times his papers were named best in Texas. In his career, Bloom penned more than 1,500 columns.

He also exclusively interviewed a host of celebrities and politicians, from boxing legend Muhammed Ali to actress Farrah Fawcett (in her “Charlie’s Angels” halcyon days), tennis legends John Newcombe and Rod Laver, football greats like Earl Campbell and Bum Phillips, golf superstars like Lee Trevino, former president George W.H. Bush and former Texas governor Ann Richards.

In addition to his newspaper career, Bloom served as a city councilman in Nixon, president of his chamber of commerce, as a member of the Lancaster Charter Review and Downtown Revitalization Commissions, president of two Texas regional press associations, director of Texas Press Association and president of the Lancaster Lions Club. Today, he is actively involved in the annual North Texas Irish Festival and as a volunteer with the Samaritan Inn, the only homeless shelter in Collin County, Texas.

In 1985, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Nixon Area Chamber of Commerce.

He is the father of three children and grandfather, and has been married to his wife, Jodie, for nine years.
